Semantic Web

Semantics, Semantics, words, words, words it's all about getting relevant information with minimal amount of effort. Wikipediaa: 'Semantic Web is an evolving extension of the World Wide Web in which the semantics of information and services on the web is defined, making it possible for the web to understand and satisfy the requests of people and machines to use the web content.'

I figure that ask the librarian could give you the 'Semantic Web' in reality than the 'Semantic Web' of the future.

Voyage RSS feed reader

I like the page on page effected of this site, not that I would use it, but if you needed to keep abreast of the news, product releases etc this would come in very handy.

KartOO

I think this is very clunky as the redirection to other sites is difficult to read, if you do a straight google/yahoo search you get a little bit more information about the site you could go to. This is not anything that I would use.

Vufind

This seems an excellent option for any library as it makes the search options very concise to searchers specific needs and gives the options for adding to your search. As it has been designed by libraries for libraries there seems more logic involved in the processes.

Linked in

Today is a new beginning for this blog, well I mean to say it is in use again.

Linked in: Signed up but didn't find it very useful with so many other networking options around. If you were looking for a specific area of expertise as it boasts on the site 'Stay informed about your contacts and industry' maybe but for me thanks but no thanks.

finale of 23 things

  • How could you draw on what you have learned in 23 Things to help you in your work?

To be in the loop about what is accessible on the net for: photo sharing; video watching; podcasting; but most importantly for going away on a holiday and never getting lost with 'Google maps'
  • How could the library use the technologies featured in 23 Things to improve its service?
Continuing the library blog so that students are informed and feed back can be easily obtained in a format that they are use to.
  • How do you think the 23 Things program could be improved in the future?

Staying actively in touch with future developments on the web

  • Do you think you'll keep blogging or keep using any of the other tools you learned about?
NO

Second life

What to say, the net is very slow so down loading is very frustrating but the idea of a digital presence as an intro into uni or library is a good idea. A wish list for any new technology to be had and the benefits for the library could be viewed quickly. This could be a great way of submitting to management for extra funding.

How can Swinburne use second life?

If your into 'Sims' then maybe you can justify the time and money for me I don't have the time to play.

Podcast

What an fantastic idea, easily accessible transcripts over the net. If you miss a particular interview and the radio station has published it as a podcast you haven't missed out at all. I have enjoyed getting use to podcasting and then onto vodcasting

YouTube - fairb12's Favorites

I have had a lot of fun checking out YouTube and came across this very funny video in a library, check it out and try if you can to keep a straight face.

Pet day

Uploaded my gold fish today. I hope you all enjoy him (well I think it's a him).

Library 2.0

It's interesting to see that there is a title for the way that library's work; to keep abreast of technologies, engage clients and staff in the development of the library so that it encourages growth, stimulates learning and develops relationship. The ways in which is done by using that which interest people and make it readily available.

Michael Stephens simply said

“Library 2.0 simply means making your library’s space (virtual and physical) more interactive, collaborative, and driven by community needs. Examples of where to start include blogs, gaming nights for teens, and collaborative photo sites. The basic drive is to get people back into the library by making the library relevant to what they want and need in their daily lives…to make the library a destination and not an afterthought.”

del.icio.us

del.icio.us
social bookmarking

What an interesting name, delicious food mag no, but a social bookmarking facility.
I couldn't resist looking up food trails and started with the good old fashion favorite sponge cake and came up with a few hits including:

Oyatsu and kasutera (castella), a Japanese sponge cake | Just Hungry

Now for a blog that is to do with friends and food del.icio.us could be a great asset friends could easily follow my trail of recipes. Well it's all gone pear shaped as there seemed to be some kind of internal problem on their end. Better luck next time.

igoogle home page

igoogle what a fantastic site, to be able to put all your favourites into one place and the selection of add ons amazing. Now I don't have to remember where google maps are and Utube is on there as well, now I can watch Jamie cooking all the time, it's just a pity that when I get home I still have to cook, I suppose new ideas though are always good. I have added google doc to my igoogle just in case I need to do some work off site somewhere. I had the option of a clock but chose not to as time already flies, I don't always need to be reminded of it. One thing I enjoyed about igoogle where the tabs you can add logically to the site and just flip a tab like in a recipe book.

Suggested improvement to igoogle: a bigger range of themes, though one that I have chosen changes as the day goes by (supposedly). The only problem to that is I have to watch it all day to see the changes. Maybe going out into the real world is still a good idea..........! Enjoy the site.

Google book

Google book search: what a great find. Looked up cooking and found

On food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen

By Harold J. McGee

I can now purchase this book, find a library to borrow it from, read the blurb, search the book for specific wording. All very helpful.

Google doc

I have had a look at 'word' on google doc and it seems to do the same as microsoft the only difference that I have found is when a part of the document is highlighted in order to change formatting for example, when finished the cursors has to be on it before disengaging.

The presentation is just as good as power point. click here to see what I have made. point.http://docs.google.com/Presentation?id=dck6pj4c_1d3v6qq&invite=8f3k3q

I personally think that when people know about this free facility they will undoubtedly use it. The only thing to be wary of is the possibility of sharing any doc you make on the web, that could produce some unforeseen problems. For myself the idea of more information stored off in some unknown cyberspace, it may take me awhile to use it.

Google maps

Google maps: This is a great site especially when you can't find the melways and your sitting behind a computer, or about to hop a plane for some exotic destination and need to find your way to the hotel. Look it up, print it out, grab your passport and off you go.

myspace/facebook

What to say about myspace: I have looked at it and found that I am not impressed with the content and the fact that it isn't safe for kids. It seems to be the site that they all want to join up with though. Don't like the way that people want to be your friend, and chat don't people have real friends.

It is good to see libraries using it to grab hold of teens and introduce them to the resources available to them and how cool library stuff can be.

Facebook: not dissimilar to flickr, an other way of staying in touch with family and friends via the net.
