I have had a look at 'word' on google doc and it seems to do the same as microsoft the only difference that I have found is when a part of the document is highlighted in order to change formatting for example, when finished the cursors has to be on it before disengaging.

I personally think that when people know about this free facility they will undoubtedly use it. The only thing to be wary of is the possibility of sharing any doc you make on the web, that could produce some unforeseen problems. For myself the idea of more information stored off in some unknown cyberspace, it may take me awhile to use it.
